I have been working for myself on and off for the past five years now as a photographer, writer, coach, and most recently, a Poofy Organics consultant. I love not having a boss, being able to wear comfy clothes all day, and being at home with my daughters, but it hasn't always been easy. A lot of my failures were due to my own mindset and the more I worked through them, the more successful that I've become. I'm still working on my mindset, and I dedicate at least 20 minutes every day to Personal & Professional Development, which I can't stress the importance of enough to the beautiful ladies on my team!
One of my biggest struggles, no matter what I was doing, was closing the sale. I struggled with this because complete financial freedom is not something I have ever experienced and I equated spending money with pain. Naturally, I felt that in charging my clients for products or services may cause them pain, and I didn't want to hurt them, so I struggled with asking for the sale. And then one day, I snapped out of it and realized that the world runs on money. It comes and goes, and if I spend some today, I'll get more tomorrow, and that it is completely okay to spend money and I shouldn't feel bad when people want to spend it with me because I am *not* hurting them! Once I realized that I provide wonderful products and services that help them and can make their lives easier and that are priced fairly as well, it was a lot easier to get out of that mindset.
To get out of the funk, I listened to money affirmations every day for at least an hour as well and started sending 10% of my earnings to our school so that God could help my money work for me and our children as well.
Another struggle that I had in terms of my mindset was that I was not going all in, and this had to do with my first struggle that we just talked about. Because I felt that money = pain, I was too shy to ask for the sale, talk to people about my products and what I could do for them, and even too shy sometimes to hand out a business card! How could people know how amazing my services and products are if I don't even want to talk about them?! One of the girls I used to work with asked me what I was doing and I said, "Oh you know, just hanging out with the girls at home..." NO TARA, THAT IS NOT OKAY! THAT IS NOT ALL IN!
I was afraid that if I told her that I was selling Poofy Organics at home and pitching to magazines that she would laugh at me because I wasn't making a lot of money yet. That night, I sat down and swore to myself and my husband that the next time someone asked me what I did, I would tell them that I was a network marketing consultant for Poofy Organics because I absolutely love them and that I've been also writing. The second I started to tell people, the game started changing for me. People started opening up to me about the products they were using but were unsatisfied with, people started asking me how they could do what I was doing, and I even started coaching four amazing women a couple weeks later!
Don't be afraid to tell people what you do. People are curious by nature, and so many people will be curious about your products or your services and will want to see you succeed if you just tell them what you're up to! They can't read your amazing new book if you don't tell them about it, and they can't buy your wonderful, organic skin care products if you don't let them know they exist, and they won't know you're a genius when it comes to product photography! You have to bite the bullet and say, "I'm a ________________! It's so amazing and gives me so much freedom to live the life I've always wanted!"
